Linux CD-ROMs

Load Linux on your computer, and kiss Microsoft goodbye!

These CD-ROMs contain several companies' Linux distributions.  Each can have you Microsoft-free within an hour.  And all have nearly the same functionality as Windows.

We offer several popular Linux distributions on CD-ROMs.  Each disk has a pretty custom label, and each set comes with a brief description of how to load it, either by booting directly from the CD, or creating boot floppies.

Unlike other Linux CD vendors, we have no gimmicks. (For example: We don't claim that our CDs are "free" except for "shipping & handling".)  All prices are postpaid via US Mail, but do not include Pennsylvania sales tax.  (Prices are good for US delivery only.)

All distributions are the most current one available as of the date you place your order.

Mandriva      Debian       Gentoo       Knoppix       Fedora Core (Red Hat)

Knoppix Linux

The perfect Linux for somebody who wants to try Linux.  Load Linux on your computer without touching your hard drive!   Knoppix can be run directly from the CD-ROM, making it perfect for trial applications where you don't even have to save a file to your disk.   Add Knoppix's outstanding hardware detection system, and you can be running Linux in minutes.

Since this distribution can run directly from the CD-ROM, it also makes an excellent "rescue" system, since you'll have a wealth of system tools in a graphical environment.  Perfect for fixing what ails you!

Comes on 1 disk.

$ 4.95 postpaid (US Mail) + 6% Pennsylvania sales tax if applicable.

Mandriva Linux

Formally known as "Mandrake", Mandriva is a very nice distribution which is perfect for the new Linux user.  It balances ease of installation and setup with power and a full suite of programs.  Installs nicely even on laptops.  You need at least 64 MBytes of RAM, and a Pentium 300 or better (it won't work on a 486!), although it can be loaded with 32 MBytes of RAM if you are willing to forgo the nice graphical installation program.

Comes on 3 disks.

$9.50 postpaid (US Mail) + 6% Pennsylvania sales tax if applicable.

Debian Linux

Debian is so politically correct, you have to call it "GNU/Linux".  Entirely produced by volunteers, this distribution takes pride in being hard to install, but is an absolute dream to keep updated with the fabulous "apt-get" package system which blows away the less sophisticated RPM system used by Mandrake, SuSE, Red Hat, and others.

Debian comes in 3 flavors, "Stable" (aka "Sarge"), "Testing", and "Unstable".  This is the long-awaited version 3.1 of Sarge, the Stable version, which is far from the bleeding edge, but is guaranteed to be rock solid.  Perfect for mission-critical applications, especially if you utilize the apt-get system to automatically update security fixes.  (Vorlon Information Technologies runs a variant of Debian.)

Comes on an astounding 14 disks!

$ 39.95 postpaid (US Mail) + 6% Pennsylvania sales tax if applicable.

Gentoo Linux

The newest rage in Linux is Gentoo (named after a breed of small penguin), this distribution has you compile all the Linux programs specifically for your computer.  In this way, you can take advantage of the special instructions only present in your particular processor.  (Most distributions are compiled for 386s or Pentiums, and forgo using the MMX and 3DNow instructions which speed up the Pentium and Athlon processors.)

This distribution is not for the novice, but is pretty darn cool for the geek or geek-wannabe.  Unlike the others, you have to have a functioning Linux system on your computer before you can install Gentoo.

Comes on 1 disk.

$ 4.95 postpaid (US Mail) + 6% Pennsylvania sales tax if applicable.

Fedora Core (aka Red Hat Linux)

The guys who made Linux a household name.  Red Hat has split their offering, with a commercial high-price product and "Fedora Core", a their freely available version.  Fedora Core typically includes more bleeding-edge software and is used as a widely distributed "beta" for their normal system which is sold to corporations.

Red Hat is the standard for commercial Linux distributions, and an excellent distribution if you want to bring Linux into your workplace.  Red Hat sets the standard for Corporate Linux.   You can't go wrong with Red Hat.

Comes on 4 disks.

$14.95 postpaid (US Mail) + 6% Pennsylvania sales tax if applicable.

Need Installation Help?

If you purchase these distributions from their publishers, they typically offer 30 - 90 days of eMail support to help you install the distribution.  If you are looking for general support for getting Linux up and running, your best bet is to purchase Linux directly from the publisher.  (After all, they work hard to produce Linux, and otherwise get nothing when you purchase your disks from us.)  Typically, they answer eMails asking for help within 48 hours, and can help you if the distribution won't install on your computer.

Unfortunately, (in my experience) their support leaves a lot to be desired because they don't help you get the programs productively running.  If you have a question like, "How do setup my network card to operate behind my corporate firewall?", they will politely decline to answer your question because it is not an "installation question".  Luckily, Vorlon Technologies can help here.

We offer personalized support for any computer question.  We bill by the hour, but you pay only after we solve your problem, and then you pay only what you think our advice was worth.  Please see our page on getting help for more information.
